After four games without a win, the Schalke board and sporting management decided to release head coach Kees van Wonderen and his assistant coach Robert Molenaar with immediate effect.
"The way things have been and are developing over the past two weeks is particularly cause for concern. We're only six points away from the relegation zone, and the trend is negative. That's why we've decided to react now. We have a responsibility to the club," says Youri Mulder, S04's Director of Professional Football. "We thank Kees and Robert for their work and wish them all the best for the future."
For the remaining two matches of the 2024/2025 season – U23 coach Jakob Fimpel will once again take over as coach.
Fimpel had already coached the team in the first half of the season when he replaced then fired coach Karel Geraerts back in late September this season. Fimpel led the team to a victory over Preußen Münster (2-1) and was in charge for Hertha (2-2) as then van Wonderen took over.
As mentioned above Schalke are still in danger of dropping into the playoff zone of the relegation battle, as well, a drop to 15th spot in the table will also put Schalke into the amateur pot of teams in the draw for the DFB-POKAL. which will have them draw much tougher opponents. Schalke currently sit in 13th spot in the table with Fürth 3pts behind them in 14th and Braunschweig in 15th spot also 3pts behind. Munster holds the farthest Schalke could drop at 16th spot 6 points away in the relegation playoff.
Schalke's next two matches are away to Dusseldorf and the final match of the season, is at the VELTINS-Arena and Elversberg.
