SCHALKE MATCHDAY 33: @ DÜSSELDORF

After the shake up with the Schalke manger after last weeks match, interim coach Jakob Fimpel takes the Schalke side on the last road game of the season.

Schalke have not defeated Düsseldorf in the last 8 competitive matches.

Schalke are also in danger of dropping into the relegation playoff zone, and either need to get at least one point on their own or will need help with Braunschweig and or Fürth to lose their matches this week, as on the Friday match Munster have continued their impressive form.of late and beat Hertha to now be 3 pts away from Schalke.

Going into this match Schalke are in 13th spot with 38 points and now 3 teams sit with 35 points with two matches left to play.

On the other end, Düsseldorf are still in a fight for promotion and a win in this match will keep them in the chase.

Before the kick-off another spectacular TIFO is displayed by the home fans and Düsseldorf put on a great display, Schalke also put on a small tifo as well.

At the kick off, Schalke try to be ambitious as the ball goes back to Younes and from the half way line he takes a shot at goal that ends up going wide.

At the 13th minute mark Düsseldorf strike first with a glorious goal as Dawid Kownacki chest downs a good cross to him and one times it from the edge of the box into the goal.

But, a VAR check finds the build up to that play was offside and the goal is called back.

The match itself is very slow and not much of a way of action since the disallowed goal.

As the match approaches half time, a big chance for Düsseldorf and in added time to the first half, Zimmermann takes his chance at goal and with Heekeren chasing the ball down, it is Kaminski that is there on the goal line and clears the ball away as Zimmermann takes his shot.

Heekeren again makes a good strong save from a corner kick as we are now five minutes into time added past the 45th minute, Heekeren gets to the ball first and after last week when he pinched the ball to the opponent, this time Heekeren punches the ball all the way to the half way line.

HALF-TIME

DÜSSELDORF 0 - SCHALKE 0

In the 57th minute Düsseldorf strike first and it is Kownacki who heads the ball in from a corner kick, he is able to beat three Schalke players around him to get his head to the ball first.

DÜSSELDORF 1 - SCHALKE 0

A emotional moment for Kownacki as his grandfather passed away and was a game time decision, he falls to his knees in tears after the goal and the team all comes around to celebrate with him.

In the 78th minute it is Düsseldorf again and Brederode and with a two on one running play, Schmidt makes the pass to a wide open Brederode and he easily scores.

DÜSSELDORF 2 - SCHALKE 0

As the match looks bleak for Schalke in the other match today, Braunschweig is getting beat by Schalke's next opponent Elversberg, who are beating Braunschweig 3-0. With this score line Schalke are almost looking safe and right now by goal differences would not drop into the relegation zone.

Nothing much develops in this match and Düsseldorf go on to defeat Schalke yet again.

Düsseldorf coach Daniel Thioune has yet to lose a match to Schalke.

FULL TIME

DÜSSELDORF 2 - SCHALKE 0

The other result helps Schalke as they are mathematically not yet safe but the goal differences are just under twenty goals need by Braunschweig if they tie Schalke on points in the last matchday next weekend.

Schalke can still drop to 15th spot in the table if the yet still to play Fürth win, and going into the last match day if Munster win.

A drop to 15th spot will put Schalke in the amateur pot of the draw for the DFB-POKAL.

Next weekend is the final matchday and Schalke will face 3rd place Elversberg who are on the cusp of their first chance at a play off promotion zone.
